6.2 Action Plan

Now that you have watched the video, take some time to think about the positive things your child does. If you need to, write them down. Using those examples, practice the skill of Effective Praise following each step. Repeat this to yourself a few times. This will help you internalize how to use the skill.

Set a goal to Effectively Praise your child at least two times within a 24 hour period.

Set a watch or timer to remind you during the day.

You can take Effective Praise further by using this skill on people you meet throughout your day. Praise them for small things they are doing well. The goal is to do this so often that it becomes second nature for you to do. Remember that Effective Praise is specific.

Effective Praise is a powerful way to help build a trusting relationship with your child while getting them to repeat postive behaviors. It can be used anywhere and for any situation. The more you practice it, the more natural it will be for you to do.
