9.1 Understanding the Skill

Unlike Preventive Teaching, Correcting Behaviors is used when you need to correct a behavior right at that moment. Correcting Behaviors is used during the “Behavior” phase of the ABC’s of Behavior. As we continue, you will notice how all the skills and concepts in this course are connected.

Using the steps of Correcting Behaviors consistently will keep you focused on what needs to be done, give you the vocabulary to say and to address issues without damaging your relationship with your child. You will notice that you will be using some of the skills you have already learned in this course while using Correcting Behaviors. For example, you will use Observe and Describe a few times during this skill. You will also use Role-playing to practice what your child should do and Effective Praise when they successfully comply.
